Prismatic Penguins

Description

Even though this may look like it, it's not a 3D rendering. I submitted this under photography because of the time I spent on the presentation, but I also decorated these boxes as well.

BOX DECORATION REMARKS: I bought 8 cardboard hexagonal boxes from Dollar Tree a year or so ago because I liked the idea that they all fit inside of each other (even though they were being sold individually), but I didn't like the black and white stripe/floral pattern that originally covered them. They sat around for all that time between then and now because I was a full-time grad student, so I didn't have much time for art. But now that I am finished and doing nothing except trying desperately to get a real job, I have more free time than I know what to do with. I got this idea when I saw that Duck Tape brand now sells sheets of duct tape in various colors and patterns. The top is covered with regular Duck Tape, the sides are covered in Duck Tape's prismatic adhesive sheets, and the sides of the lid are covered with a matching sparkling white ribbon that was glued on. I'm thinking I might decorate more paper boxes like this for when I start my jewelry business.

PRESENTATION REMARKS: When I set these next to each other to dry (I glued around the edges so the tape wouldn't start to peel off), I liked how clearly the penguins were reflected off of the prismatic sides as well as the fact that the boxes appeared transparent when I set them down on almost any surface, so I decided to run with that and take a picture of them in sort of an "organized chaos" way that would capture those things. I did use a flash because it greatly improved the quality of the reflections. Without it, half of the reflective faces were a flat, dark gray. Taking the picture from a higher angle also brightened up the reflections. That light blue just gave everything a wonderful overall icy look. At first glance these boxes may trick your eyes, which is what I think is great about them.
